Grupo Recreativo Gonçalvinhense (Judo section)

Based in Mafra (Portugal), the Grupo Recreativo Gonçalvinhense Group was founded in 1958 and registered as an Association in 1982. In 2007, the Judo section was born, being affiliated tothe Lisbon Judo Regional Association and the Portuguese Judo Federation. The Judo section of Grupo Recreativo Gonçalvinhense, currently the only sport section of the club, focuses its action on the Judoists, their family and the community where it belongs, promoting the principles and values that guide Judo, sports and the club. In 2020, the club has about 120 judokas, which include about 20 athletes over 40 years of age. The club has already formed 17 black belts and has 4 certified coaches and 4 others involved in the training process. Two young judoists are also certified Judo referees. In 2018, it was established a partnership with the People Family Health Clubs being opened 6 new Judo classes at its facilities in Sintra, Mafra and Venda do Pinheiro. Since its founding, two athletes won the National Championship in the Under-16 and Under-23 categories, in addition to other national medals in the youth ranks, as well as several participations in the national youth teams and representation in official international competitions. The clubs look to strength its position in the community through different but common educational and social initiatives. In 2017, the Ethics in Sport National Plan, developed by the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (General Sports Authority in the country), recognized the Judo section of the Grupo Recreativo Gonçalvinhense with the “Ethics Flag”, having been the first club or club section to receive such an honour across the country, a recognition that was renewed in 2019.
